SparkyGen – Maya Autorigging Plugin for Cartoony Characters

Sometimes, the charme and style of a Concept Art or 2D Animatic gets lost in translation when converting into 3D. The geometrical perfect and mathematical correct shapes take something from the characteristic, drawn shapes of 2D.

During the production of the Peanuts Movie, the Studio BlueSky came up with a solution for their characters. They would change the characters heads in such a way, that they would resemble the drawn shapes in the original comics. Based on the cameras perspective, the heads would deform to the desired shapes typically seen at that angle.

SparkyGen is an Autorigging Tool for Maya I developed, inspired by the work of BlueSky as an easy to use tool, so everyone can animate characters in a more artistic and 2D approach. By simply dragging and dropping your different shapes into the tool, it can create a fully rigged character ready to work with.
